We move gradually from simple to complex — without long and dry theory. Everything is learned through hands-on practice. The main workspace for the course is Ableton Live 10.1, and the primary devices we’ll use are a computer and the Ableton Push 2 controller.
To start learning and complete your homework all you’ll need is a computer and headphones. The Push is provided by the school.
Below, you’ll find the course structure. It consists of three modules, each with 8 lessons:
I. Introduction to Ableton Live. Basics of Composition and Arrangement
II. Sound Design
III. Mixing, Mastering & Live Performance
The first part is dedicated to getting to know the program, learning the basics of composition and arrangement. We’ll dive into the physics of sound, basic music theory, and build the skeleton of your future track.
In the second part, we’ll go deep into sound design — learning to create sounds from scratch, exploring tools, experimenting a lot, and developing your unique sonic identity.
In the third part, we’ll focus on polishing your work so it sounds professional. You’ll learn the fundamentals of mixing and mastering, and in the final stage, explore the potential of live performance.
This program outlines the general themes covered in the course.
Each instructor has their own approach and method of presenting the material. You can read more about their teaching styles on their personal pages — or find out during a free intro session.
1. Acquaintance with the program
Overview of the Ableton live 10.1 interface. Analysis of the main and additional parameters. Get acquainted with the effects and instruments. Master the functionality of the Ableton Push controller.
2. The physical nature of sound
We understand how sound works and how the room affects its perception. We will tell you what timbre, amplitude, harmonics, frequency and dynamic ranges are.
3. Basic music theory
Important basics of musical notation necessary for writing music. We reveal the concepts: mode, tonality, harmonic and melodic intervals, chords, tempo, time and rhythm.
4. Forming the structure of the track
We create the skeleton of the mix. We work on the arrangement, building the rhythmic and melodic structure of the track. We learn to write rhythm and melody, form a groove.
5. Architecture of electronic instruments
We consider the structure of synthesizers using examples of Ableton virtual instruments live and physical in the studio. We study their main blocks and the features of their interaction with each other.
6. Sound synthesis
We understand the types of synthesis and consider in detail the main ones: analog, FM, granular, wavetable.
7. Creating your own presets
Presets are blanks that help speed up work. We learn how to set up the unique sound of your instruments once and not repeat routine actions.
8. Enriching the timbre of an instrument
One way to make the sound fatter and more interesting is layering. Its essence is in the combination of different timbres of the sound of instruments. We consider the features and methods of using this technique.
9. Frequency and dynamic balance
We study the processes of equalization, compression, saturation, panning and volume balancing. We analyze the features of the operation of these effects on groups and individual channels of the mix.
10. Working with space
We understand the spatial perception of sounds. We learn to adjust effects based on time delay: chorus, flanger, delay, echo and reverb to create plans and atmosphere of the track.
11. Automation and modulation
We configure the automation of synthesizer and effect parameters to add dynamic and timbral shades to the sound of the mix.
12. Finalization (mastering)
Before this, we worked with individual elements of the track, at this stage we are engaged in processing the master channel of the final mix.
13. Live performance
We learn to play live using a laptop and an Ableton Push 2 controller, as well as on analog equipment without using a computer. Features of setup preparation and jam practice.
